Dalkia International's first cogeneration project in Israel

Dalkia International has been chosen by Israel's Delek Group to manage an 82 MWe cogeneration unit that will provide electrical power and thermal energy to the seawater desalination plant operated by Veolia Water in Ashkelon on the Israeli coast.

The 23-year contract represents annual revenue of €3.6 million for Dalkia. The unit will be connected to the plant and brought on stream in the second quarter of 2007.

The thermal energy produced by the unit will be used directly in the desalination process. More than half of the electrical power generated will be used (up to 56 MWe) by the plant, with the remainder to be sold to the Israeli power network.

In addition to its very high energy output, the cogeneration unit will enable the desalination plant to optimise its electrical supply.

Map of Israel - Location of the cogeneration plant

Located south of Tel Aviv, the Ashkelon plant is the world's largest desalination plant using reverse osmosis membrane technology. It has production capacity of 320,000 cubic meters of drinking water a day (i.e., 108 million cubic metres annually). The 25-year contract was awarded to Veolia Water and its Israeli partners in September 2001, following an international call for bids by the Israeli government. The project demonstrates the synergies that exist between Dalkia and Veolia Water's environmental expertise.

With operations in Israel since spring 2005 via Dalkia Energy and Services, Dalkia already manages several energy and multi-technical service contracts for commercial and industrial customers, among them BTH, Graphoprint and Sun Microsystems.
